Porth Teigr adds another accolade to its award tally

At the recent ICE [Institute of Civil Engineers] Wales Cymru Project Awards, Porth Teigr picked up the Roy Edwards Award for the Outer Lock Crossing which provides the gateway to the 38 acre development and to Wales's creative industries.

The ICE Wales Cymru Project Awards are the highlight of the Welsh civil engineering calendar and give recognition to outstanding examples of design and construction.

Keith Jones, Director ICE Wales Cymru said: "I'm proud that our Project Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in civil engineering in Wales. These projects show the level of expertise in civil engineering and we can all be proud and share in their successes."

Sally Sudworth, Chair of the Project Awards Panel, said: "The judges were impressed by the sensitive approach to the heritage value of the location of the Porth Teigr scheme and to the provision of high quality public open space at the gateway to the development. It is a striking structure that will no doubt be a landmark for decades to come."

The £2.5m Porth Teigr Outer Lock Crossing, which spans a 24.5m wide lock, was designed by Studio Bednarski / Flint & Neill, with VINCI Construction UK Ltd as the principal contractor and fabricated by Rowecord.

The project involved working around a listed dock wall which was built during Cardiff's reign as one of the biggest coal exporting docks in the world.  This added complexities which the project team skilfully worked around, avoiding excessive loads on the dock wall and protecting its heritage features, whilst still creating a striking local feature.

Mark Hallett, Development Director for igloo Regeneration, says: "We are delighted to have scooped another award for Porth Teigr, particularly such a prestigious one as this.  The Outer Lock Crossing is already becoming one of Porth Teigr's most recognisable features, which is fitting for the gateway to Cardiff's media capital."
